1.00Has anyone used a roofer who was experienced with flat roofs?
Q.I am looking for a roofer who has specific extensive experience with flat roofs that you can recommend from personal experience.
A.It would help to know where you are located. You can call the local BBB for references for roofers. You can find smaller companies on the builder bulletin boards at places like Lowes or Home Depot. A roofing supplier will have one of these boards too. Most will not recommend any one company, hence the use of the board for their business cards. Make sure and check references of other customers they've done work for. Flat roofs can be tricky and will tend to leak if not done correctly. Good luck.
1.00Tile in a 3 season porch that gets very cold in the winter?
Q.Hello! I currently have a 3 season sunroom addition on the back of my home that has been stripped down to the wood. I recently saw a 4 season sunroom that had tile down and needless to say, I fell in love with it! I am thinking about putting tile down in there but am worried about the weather...I live in Minnesota where it gets very cold...and that room is not heated in the winter. Would I have problems with the tile cracking? Or does anyone know of an alternative way to get a tile-looking floor without having to worry the temperature changes??
A.Tile can be laid outside, so temperature is not the issue. The type of tile you use will determine if it stays down or not. I would look into a porcelain tile which is double fired and extremely hard, or a frost-proof tile which is used around swimming pools.
1.00Is it okay to use lowe's wall tile for a bathroom shower?
Q.We have hired a professional contractor to finish a bathroom in our basement and he is installing our flooring and tiling. He is encouraging me to use wall tile from florida tiles @ $3.00/sq. ft. but at Lowe's they have the matching wall tile from the tile that I choose for my floor at 0.58/piece. The only difference from the wall and floor tile there is the size. I told my contractor about this and he said the tile should not be the same b/c of the moisture that will get into the wall tile and that I should order from Florida Tile. I am very confused and don't want to get screwed. Any suggestions or does anyone have knowledge in this area? Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.
A.He either is intentionally being untruthful or he's an idiot and has no business being in the tile business. He makes a lot of extra profit if you buy the very expensive tile from him. Tile is tile -- it's clay baked in an oven with a glaze, and neither is more likely to allow moisture behind. The shower pan should have a sheet rubber lining, and the walls should be backed with James Hardie Tile Backer. Period. I recommend applying sealant to the wall tile for easier maintenance. Don't like it for floor of shower.
1.00Is it safe to walk on a metal roof of a metal building?
Q.I'm looking to buy a metal warehouse building. The walls and roof are dirty and need cleaning. While the structure is plenty sound, I'm wondering how safe it is to walk on the roof. I was wondering if all metal roofs are built strong enough to support a person walking on it.
For other types of roofs in colder climates, building codes specify a load capacity to hold up under snow. Here in Houston, such support does not apply. As the roof itself is very light, it doesn't need to be very strong to shed off rain.
A.I've done a lot of work on metal roofs, and i have only came across 1 that was too thin to walk on. it wasn't that it wouldn't support me either, (230lbs) it just bent, and dented when i walked on it. this just simply made it look ugly... feel a corner or edge if you can find one. if you can bend it easily with your fingers, it's too thin, but if it's quite rigid, and you can't bend it without plyers, it should hold up to your boots!
not sure where you are, but where i am, we are starting to get frost. take EXTRA care on those metal roofs during this coming winter season!
1.00Legal advice on bad home remodeling in Texas.?
Q.I had tile installed in my house and after a couple years they all started popping off. Called the company that installed the tile and they came out and determined that it was an installation error. They said the floor had not been cleaned properly before installation. They now say they will repair the tile for free BUT I have to pay for the new tile, which is identical to what they installed the first time. They told me they would install some $.99 cent tile for free that doesn't match the rest of the tile in my house. There is ALOT of tile they are replacing.
What are my legal rights here and who do I contact?? I am in Texas.
Shouldn't they be responsible for replacing the tile for free?
Let me also make it clear that they admitted that it is totally their fault. I have paid for the tile once and if they had done their work properly none of this would be going on.
A.Frankly, so much time has passed that you're lucky the contractor is willing to redo the work, even if you have to pay for the tile. Can they save any of the old tile? I know it's hard to do sometimes, but see if they can. Unless you have a contract that gives a warranty on workmanship for XX number of years-- which is rare to get -- then I don't think you have any recourse. Sorry....

Tile Roofs
Variations of tile roofing are now seen in homes all across the country. Tile roofing techniques are some of the oldest around. In fact people have used tile roofs for centuries. Tile roofing is typically used in warm weather climates because the tiles used in roofing posses heat resistant qualities. Tile roofs are often associated with Spanish style homes. However, with newer innovations resulting in concrete and metal roofing, tile roofs are being used in all kinds of houses across the country, including in Jacksonville, Florida. Our specialist tile roofing contractors in the Jacksonville area bring years of experience in the residential and commercial roofing business and are equipped to handle all kinds of roofing issues, including roofing estimate.
Roofing tiles are usually made of clay. They can be delicate and can sometimes break or crack. Tile roofs often present special challenges because they can be easily damaged during storms by falling branches, hail, and other heavy objects. The inspection of clay tile roofs is also hard since your weight could possibly cause them to crack or break. Typically, a good method to determine if there are any cracks in your roof tiles from ground level is to use binoculars. If you have eliminated the possibility of damage due to falling heavy objects, clay tiles are very strong and can be expected to last for up to 50 years. Clay tiles are also resistant to the inclement weather, and can even resist hurricanes and earthquakes more effectively than other types of roofing materials. Roofing tiles do have excellent energy efficient properties, and they can keep your house cool in summer and warm during the winters. Colors of roofing tiles are not restricted to the popular adobe red, but they also are made in a variety of shades of blue and green. Colored tiles can last for years without fading in the sun. Clay tiles can also be manufactured to look like woodshingles or shakes, which adds to their versatility. It is important to remember to replace broken or damaged tiles as soon as you discover them to prevent further damage to your home. When purchasing roofing tiles, you should look for tiles that do not have any blackening in the center. A blackened middle can indicate that the tile has not been baked long enough and that it may not be sound. Just like tile roofing, slate roofing is also heavy, but it is typically more on the expensive side. Slate roofing tends to be brittle and hence prone to damage, so many contractors prefer to use clay tiles.
Tile roofs can definitely improve the aesthetic appeal of any Jacksonville area home's exterior, thus adding value to the house. If roofing tiles are properly installed, they will provide a visually pleasing appearance that will stay in style for many years. The wood facade above my back patio is rotting. I need to have this replaced and also would like to have the roof checked to see if there is a leak that is causing the rotting in the facade.

Currently have a welded rubber roof on a flat roofed home. I am considering a granular coated epdm roof installed over the existing roof(no tear off) with 1/2" insulation. I've been told the area is approx. 32 squares and that there is around 400 linear feet at the boundary with the mansard shingle roof. The shingles are in good shape and would only be replacing two rows of the shingles around the bottom of the upper mansard(sp?)
